Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights

Auf Initiative des Hebbel-Theaters kam zwei Jahre nach Mauerfall ein ungewöhnliches Projekt zustande: Wie bereits in früheren Inszenierungen wollte der renommierte amerikanische Regisseur Robert Wilson mit ausschließlich jungen Darstellern arbeiten. Das Hebbel-Theater brachte ihn mit Schauspielstudenten der Ost-Berliner Hochschule für Schauspielkunst Ernst Busch und der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee zusammen. Die Textwahl fiel auf Gertrude Steins "Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights". Als Komponist für das Opern-Libretto von 1938 konnte Hans Peter Kuhn, international bekannt durch Klanginstallationen und Kompositionen für Theater und Tanz, gewonnen werden. Die vom Hebbel-Theater angeregte Koproduktion mit Change (Mailand) und Le Manège (Maubeuge) war nicht nur in Berlin ein überwältigender Erfolg. Der Premiere im April 1992 folgte eine internationale Tournee mit Aufführungen u.a. in Antwerpen, Frankfurt/M., Hongkong, Jerusalem, Lissabon, Montréal, New York, Paris, Rom und Venedig.

In intensiven Workshops 1996 und 1997 fand die Zusammenarbeit Robert Wilsons mit Hans Peter Kuhn und den Studenten der Ernst-Busch-Schule ihre Fortsetzung - hinzu kamen Absolventen der Mailänder Theaterschule von Giorgio Strehler.
Diesmal wählte Robert Wilson als Textgrundlage Gertrude Steins Sprach-Spiel "Saints and Singing". Die Koproduktion mit der Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz (Berlin), dem TAT (Frankfurt/M.), La Filature (Mulhouse) und De Singel (Antwerpen) konnte mit umjubelten Aufführungen in Berlin, Belfast, Frankfurt/M., Mulhouse, Paris, Taormina, Antwerpen und Ljubljana an den überraschenden Erfolg von "Doctor Faustus" anknüpfen.

Robert Wilson

Two years after the fall of the Wall, an unusual project was undertaken on the initiative of the Hebbel-Theater. The renowned American director Robert Wilson wanted to work with young actors and actresses again, as he had frequently done earlier in his career. The Hebbel-Theater brought him together with acting students from the East Berlin's Ernst Busch College of Acting and the College of the Arts in Berlin-Weissensee. The text selected for this project was Gertrude Stein's "Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights". Hans Peter Kuhn, internationally known for his sound installations and compositions for theater and dance, agreed to write the score for the 1938 opera libretto. The co-production, initiated by the Hebbel-Theater with Change (Milan) and Le Manège (Maubeuge), was not only overwhelmingly successful in Berlin. The premiere in April 1992 was followed by an international tour with performances in Antwerp, Frankfurt/M., Hongkong, Jerusalem, Lisbon, Montréal, New York, Paris, Rome and Venice (among other cities).

In 1996 and 1997, Wilson's collaboration with Hans Peter Kuhn and the students of the Ernst Busch College continued in intensive seminars - in which graduates of the Giorgio Strehler College of Theater in Milan also participated. This time, Wilson chose Gertrude Stein's "Saints and Singing". The co-production with the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz (Berlin), the TAT (Frankfurt/M.), La Filature (Mulhouse) and De Singel (Antwerp) built on the surprising success of "Doctor Faustus", with peformances in Berlin, Belfast, Frankfurt/M., Mulhouse, Paris, Taormina, Antwerp and Ljubljana.
